Is mobile access to the web important to YOU?

After just coming back from overseas I had to deal with the dilemma of buying a new phone given that I smashed mine into little pieces. Now, I'm sure most people find it exciting to shop and see what's out there, be on top of the latest gadgets and all that, but personally, it doesn't interest me. I am practical and simple and want things done nice and easy.

There is no reason for me to hack software and download cracked apps - and I suppose it comes down to more of a principle thing given the fact that I'm a programmer. Piracy isn't something I necessarily advocate.

Either way, when it comes to functionality, I want my email access and I want to call people. Full stop.

That was until I got an iPhone.

With my phone now I can synchronise with Microsoft Exchange to get my calendar events and emails. I can check msn and facebook to keep in touch with what my friends are doing. I can check my bank balance to make sure I have enough money to buy my Mum flowers on the way to see my parents. etc etc

What I am saying is that the world of ease opens up to you if you let it. It's all about stepping through that door.

This is where I ask you: Has the door opened for you? Have you tried it and disapprove? If so, why? If you approve, what do you think can be improved or what would you like to see?

The stage is yours...

Those new phones are just way too expensive... I would "step through the door" if I could afford it. Also, if I were to get one on a plan I suppose I would be paying a fair bit for it a month. Money stops me at the moment unfortunately...

I had tried almost all the new phones that came out (ex: I Phone, Blackberry Curve, Samsung Glyde, LG Versa) and in my experience not worth it!! They are all over priced and as soon as you get that new phone something better and grander comes out. I do agree with the ease and connivance of having all the wonders at your fingertips, but living in a major city on public transit you get those nosy people who look over you shoulder and read what you are. Something I really loathe. So even though the connivance is there I would stick with a simple phone for a simple person.

Running my own business means I need to be contactable at all times. Having an iPhone allows me to check, compose and forward emails on the go. This means I don't have to sit in the office all day, or get worried when I'm away from my laptop and internet access. As a business tool it is an essential item to have, therefore the cost is basically a moot point.

Sure it's great to be able to Facebook wherever you are, check your Dreamteam stats, play with the Apps you've legally downloaded if that's what you're into, but for me it comes down to being accessible at all times.

Apart from the "wank" factor fo having an iPhone, i think think it's an invaluable piece of gear.

Great question Mark, such an inspiration you are.
I would like to believe it is not important as it is one more burden to your life, however i reckon if i had an iphone, i will fall under the same trap as everyone including you unfortunately. Tied down by technology. You will never have a private life, work will always attached to you and gone are the days that you can use "i dont have email access" when you are on holidays.
I still think you are great and truly a precious gem despite everything. Keep up the good work

Hey Mark, Mobile access is critical and we cannot carry a big box (laptop) with us everywhere. With phones lilke iPhone you are in touch with everything...

Also with the increase in the number of apps for iPhone we can really find it very handy and have exponential functionalitly to your phone.

Love iPhone...

6 months ago, ask any of my friends if they were interested and they would have said no. Now it's hard to find someone I know WITHOUT a smartphone. It's amazing how fast mainstream adoption of this technology kicked in. I couldnt live without my iPhone now!
